Fresh strawberries are now available at our farm market in Kelowna. Strawberries are one of the region’s favourite treats for good reason. They are a versatile berry, blending well in smoothies, canning, and even added fresh to your homemade ice cream or frozen yogurt. Strawberries freeze very well, storing all the nutrition for future use, and when you add frozen berries to your smoothie, they add a thick creamy texture, perfectly cooled to beat the summer heat. To freeze, prep the berries by washing them, then removing the stem and caps. If you dry them first on a towel, and freeze them in a flat single layer, they won’t stick together in a clear plastic bag or tray.
Fresh local strawberries are good for you. They’re an excellent source of vitamin C and manganese and contain vitamin B9 and potassium. Strawberries are also rich in antioxidants that a healthy amount of fiber. Dietary fiber is important, as it feeds the friendly bacteria in your gut and improve digestive health.
